Minimum Browser Requirements

Browsers

The preferred web browser for the web site is Internet Explorer 4 or higher.  Netscape 4 or higher will work, but not as well in some cases.  JavaScript MUST be enabled for the drop down menus to work.

Plug-Ins

The monthly Almanac newsletter, some maps of Franklin Farm, and other files are saved as a "PDF" file that require the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.  If you want to view the Flash animations, you may need the plug-in installed if your browser does not support it already.

Troubleshooting

Problem: Why can't I see the menus?
Solution:

  1. Does your browser meet the minimum requirements?
    Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher
    Netscape 4.0 or higher
    Opera 3.5 or higher
To find out the version number of your web browser, click on Help on the web browser menu. Then click on About to show the web browser version number.

  2. Make sure your web browser has JavaScript turned on.
    Internet Explorer 4:
On the menu, choose View and then Internet Options.
    Click on the Security tab.
Click on the Internet icon (globe next to local intranet and trusted sites), if it isn't high lighted already.
Click on the gray Custom Level button.
Scroll down to Active Scripting (near the bottom of the list) and choose Enable.
    Click the OK button twice.
If you still can't see the menu, then reboot the computer.

    Internet Explorer 5 and 6:
On the menu, choose Tools and then Internet Options.
If you still can't see the menu, then reboot your computer.

    Netscape Navigator:
On the menu, choose Edit and then Preferences.
Click on the Advanced tab in the white box on the left.
Make sure there is a check mark in the box beside Enable JavaScript.
    Click the OK button.
If you still can't see the menu, then reboot your computer.

  3. Press the refresh icon on your browser to reload the web page.

Problem: Why do the web pages have a mixture of fonts when I use Netscape?
Solution: Make sure the Cascading Style Sheets feature is turned on in Netscape.
On the menu, choose Edit and then Preferences.
Click on the Advanced tab in the white box on the left.
Make sure there is a check mark in the box beside Enable Style Sheets.
        Click the OK button.

Problem: Why do the web page have more features in Internet Explorer than in Netscape?
Solution: Netscape does not handle a web feature called Cascading Style Sheets as well as Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer will change the color of the links as the mouse pointer rolls over it and show the text the way it was meant to be seen. While Netscape was a better web browser in years past, Internet Explorer now is the better browser and offers more features.
